This book is a celebration of the formation of the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters (WASLI).
On 31 October to 2 November 2005, the Inaugural WASLI Conference took place in Worcester, South Africa. This important event brought together over 200 interpreters from 40 different countries and was the culmination of years of hard work and determination to realise the dream of WASLI - the advancement of sign language interpreting worldwide.
This publication brings to you the 15 papers presented at the conference by experts from around the globe. Presenters included Member of the South African Parliament, Wilma Newhoudt-Druchen (President of the Deaf Federation of South Africa) and Carol-lee Aquiline (former General Secretary of the World Federation of the Deaf) who both highlighted the importance of working together and sharing a global responsibility for the development of interpreting services worldwide. There are other equally thought provoking papers. There is no other publication in which you can read about sign language interpreting in Palestine, the effect of colonisation of sign languages in Africa or TV interpreting in Norway, as well as papers on the comparison of the sign language interpreting profession in the US, Australia and the UK, discourse based approaches to teaching interpreters and discourse genre and linguistic mode.
This is a valuable resource for all sign language interpreters, students and interpreter trainers, and contains much to interest those who wish to know more about the situation of sign language interpreting from an international perspective.
