The WASLI Board
WASLI Regional Representative – Latino America

Jose Luis Brieva (Columbia)
Jose is an experienced interpreter and currently serves as the President of ANISCOL – the National Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Columbia.
Jose was appointed as the individual to develop the work of WASLI in Latino America. The region was formerly known as ‘South America’ but during the WASLI 2007 conference in Segovia, interpreters from this region proposed the name change.
“I am very honoured to be appointed as the person to develop the work of WASLI in the Latino America region. My aim is to make contact with my colleagues in the other countries. Already a meeting took place during the WFD with colleagues from Venezuela, Uruguay, Panama, Cuba, Costa Rica, (in addition to the colleagues I made contact with in Segovia from Peru, Argentina). I know that WASLI has contacts in many of the other countries of this region.
My aim is to make contact with as many as possible as soon as possible so that we can look at ways of working together to develop sign language interpreting. I am also working with colleagues to ensure that as much information as possible can be translated in Spanish”.
