WASLI Regional Representative – North America

Liz Scott Gibson, WASLI President

Deb Russell (Canada)

email

Deb is a certified interpreter, educator, and researcher living in Canada.  She began interpreting in 1979 and maintains an active interpreting practice, with a special emphasis on legal and mental health settings.

As a researcher she studies aspects of discourse analysis, cross-cultural interactions, and the impact of interpretation on consumers. I have taught in interpreting programmes in Canada and recently began teaching on-line courses for US programmes.

Deb enjoys travelling, and has provided workshops and presentations throughout Canada, the USA, Sweden, Ukraine, Switzerland, and Malaysia.

She served as President of our national association, AVLIC, and has been very involved in the development of interpreter accreditation tools.

Deb was elected as the WASLI representative for the North America region at the inaugural WASLI conference in 2005 South Africa.  She was re-elected at the WASLI conference in Segovia 2007.

“I look forward to contributing to WASLI’s development, by ensuring that the experiences of interpreters from Mexico, United States and Canada are shared at the international level.  I am committed to community development projects that improve interpreting in all regions represented by WASLI.  My approach is one of working collaboratively with Deaf people and the organisations that represent their interests. I am excited about the possibilities that WASLI and WFD share that can enhance the interpreting profession internationally and it is an honour to serve WASLI.”
